Breaking down the Cannonball "Maki vs Clan" AMV
the maki vs clan AMV — timing chaos, layered SFX, and the color grade that ties the whole fight together.
cannonball was a nightmare to cut ngl. fight choreography is unforgiving — you can't hide a bad cut behind a transition because the eye follows the movement.
the approach
i cut the whole thing on markers first. every punch, every impact, every camera shake — all marked on the beat before i touched a single frame of anime.
that's the trick. build the rhythm first, then match the visuals to it. not the other way around.
picking the moments
maki fights are perfect for AMVs because the choreography is already cinematic. but you can't just use the "cool" shots — you need the setup shots too. the pause before the hit is what makes the hit land.
SFX game
for fight AMVs SFX is 50% of the edit. every hit has: - base impact - low end boom - metal shing on the katana moments - ambient whoosh for the movement
layer them, don't just drop one and call it done.
color grade
went with cold blues for the setup, warm oranges for the impacts. classic contrast but it works. adds emotional weight without being distracting.
if you want to learn from it
the project file is on the store. every layer labelled, every marker in place. open it up in after effects and you can see exactly why the pacing works.
this one taught me more than any tutorial ever did. fight AMVs will humble you real fast.
